About the position

The Detroit Fire Department is seeking dedicated individuals for the position of Firefighter Student EMT or Firefighter Student Paramedic. This role is crucial in providing a safe environment for the citizens and visitors of Detroit through public education, enforcement of fire codes, and efficient emergency response. The department employs over 1,200 personnel across seven divisions, operating from 39 facilities throughout the city. As a Firefighter Student, you will be under immediate supervision, responding to emergency incidents with an assigned company to extinguish fires or mitigate various incidents. You will also be responsible for cleaning and caring for apparatus, equipment, and quarters. In addition to firefighting duties, you will operate as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), responding to 9-1-1 calls for medical emergencies, trauma, and other public emergencies. You will administer pre-hospital emergency medical care in accordance with approved medical protocols and department regulations. This includes operating department-issued emergency vehicles and providing transportation for the sick and injured to medical facilities. The position requires participation in public education programs and community relations activities to educate the public on how to protect life and property. You will also be involved in various training classes to enhance your technical skills and knowledge in emergency response and firefighting techniques. Upon successful completion of the academy, your pay rate will increase, and there is a clear path for salary advancement based on tenure and performance.
